Download current balsa release

Current revision - 2.3.27 - released on 2008-12-30

This is a current release with several improvements in the user interface. In particular GTK>=2.6.0 is required to build this release.

Following changes were introduced in the 2.3.26 release:

• porting to most recent GTK versions.
• documentation ported to gnome-doc format. (#559825)
• partial translations of the manual to German and Spanish.
• gnome-keyring is used if available (experimental).
• disable deprecated apis only in svn tree (#561875).
• initial experimental support for WebKit.

Following changes were introduced in the 2.3.25 release:

• GMail compatibility.
• notification in GNOME panel are optional now.
• wrapping of flowed text improved.
• lots of various bug fixes.

Following changes were introduced since 2.3.23 release:

• Support for accessing files over gnome-vfs (smb, ssh mounts, etc.)
• maildir tree scanning fixes.
• Rudimentary support for sending text/html messages.
• UIDPLUS IMAP extension support.

Download (please observe that balsa is included in several linux distributions - please check there first for an appropriate version!):

• balsa-2.3.26.tar.bz2 with sha1sum 08fd06a3e93b155a0bca727f8a2bff3589bc36df.
• LibESMTP Source tarball is available from libesmtp site.
• gmime-2.2.21.tar.gz on the GMIME site (check for the latest version; please note that gmime releases 2.2.17, 2.2.18, 2.2.19, 2.2.20 have known bugs).

Packages for libesmtp and gmime are also available for several Linux distributions; to build from source, you will need these and the corresponding -devel packages.

SVN source & build instructions

Balsa source is also available from the GNOME SVN repository. Check out balsa module. The SVN version is sometimes not sufficiently stable for everyday use it but has all the new features and is the best starting point if you want to hack Balsa.

Currently, only the main branch is active:

svn co http://svn.gnome.org/svn/balsa/trunk balsa

You will need aspell-devel (required) and gnome-print-devel (optional) packages for building Balsa.
